2024 Tennessee Economic Update

Marianne Wanamaker, PhD, Professor of Economics and Dean of the Baker School of Public Policy and Public Affairs, The University of Tennessee, Knoxville

The presentation looks at the short and long-term economic & investment implications of the post-COVID pandemic environment. The strength of businesses and consumers going into the crisis, along with unprecedented monetary and fiscal stimulus, has continued to surprise in terms of America’s speed of economic and profits recovery. The economic boom featured 40-year high inflation and a drum-tight labor market. Each has been normalizing, but markets worry that the Federal Reserve remains too restrictive, which could drive the economy into a recession. Or will inflation resume? Finally, the presentation looks at US politics; and demographics, with the massive Millennial generation reaching their prime productivity, earnings and spending years. The future may be challenging or bright, but it will be interesting!

Utilizing Technology and Embracing AI in Credit Decisioning

April Brissette, Chief Risk Officer, BHG, Syracuse, N.Y.

As the financial industry evolves, technology and artificial intelligence (AI) are transforming the way banks approach credit decisioning. In this session, April Brissette, Chief Risk Officer at BHG Financial, will explore how institutions can leverage technology throughout the entire lending process to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and customer experience.

11:10 a.m.

Good People Stay: The True Indicator of a Healthy Bank Culture

Dave Martin, Founder, bankmechanics, Houston, Texas

This presentation explores the pivotal role of people as the ultimate differentiator in today’s banking landscape, where advanced technology is increasingly a baseline requirement for success. While leveraging technology remains essential for competitiveness, the true distinguishing factor lies in investing in the hiring, development, and retention of top talent.

It delves into the key role of mentoring at all levels within the banking sector, highlighting it as one of the most impactful forms of training and development. Mentoring fosters growth, knowledge sharing, and leadership skills in both mentors and mentees, making it a critical component of organizational development.

Contrary to widespread fears, the presentation clarifies that AI will not lead to an employment apocalypse. Instead, AI tools will enhance productivity by augmenting the capabilities of productive employees, making them more efficient and effective in their roles. Employee retention is presented as a crucial cultural indicator, akin to a canary in the coalmine. High retention rates are often a sign of a positive work environment and strong employee engagement, which lead to more productive teams, higher customer satisfaction, and increased loyalty. The presentation underscores that retention rates are not just numbers but reflections of a company’s true culture and predictors of future business success.

“Good People Stay: The True Indicator of a Healthy Bank Culture” blends real-world examples, data, and humor to remind banking leaders that while technology levels the playing field, people still define the winners.
